  4.     I support Montana's decision to allow sportsmen to harvest the
  5. bison that have roamed outside the bounds of Yellowstone National
  6. Park (NATION, Feb.20). One reason for instituting the hunt is to
  7. prevent the spread of brucellosis from buffalo to domestic
  8. livestock and from livestock to the human population. Montana has
  9. spent more than $30 million since the 1950s to make its livestock
  10. brucellosis-free, and an additional $600,000 is laid out annually
  11. to vaccinate cattle in the state. The bison in Yellowstone Park are
  12. infected with brucellosis, and those animals are posing a threat
  13. to one of Montana's leading industries.

  19.     I am outraged! The photograph of the bison baggers shows two
  20. murderous hunters rejoicing over the violated carcass of one of the
  21. world's noblest animals. That picture makes me question the belief
  22. that man is created in the image of God.

  27.     The state-sponsored buffalo hunt reminds me of what naturalist
  28. Joseph Wood Krutch said some time ago: "When a man wantonly
  29. destroys one of the works of man we call him a vandal. When he
  30. wantonly destroys one of the works of God we call him a sportsman."
